Position Paper Guidelines

Position Papers are not required. However, submitting a position paper makes delegates eligible for Research Awards. The last day to submit a position paper is November 1st at 11:59PM. Committee Awards do not require a position paper.

All Position Papers must be submitted to the committee chair's email, which can be found under "Committees". We recommend you follow the instructions below in writing your position paper.

General Formatting:
  • Use 12-point Times New Roman font, single spaced
  • Papers must be 1 - 2 pages, excluding the Works Cited page
  • Include a header with the committee name, topic, and country in the top left-hand corner of every page. Example:
    • Committee: United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC)
    • Topic: Internment Camps of Japanese During World War II
    • Country: United States
  • Each paper must include five bold subheadings aligned with the left margin of the page: Background, UN Involvement, Country Policy, Possible Solutions, and Works Cited
  • All position papers must include a Works Cited page

Writing the Position Paper:
All position papers should have the following:

Background:
  • This portion of the position paper should be approximately half a page. It should include the following:
  • General information about the topic
  • Events that have occurred in the past that are relevant to the topic
  • Solutions countries have been implemented in the past

UN Involvement:
  • This portion is OPTIONAL for The Armenian Genocide, The Ottoman Empire, & The Brest-Litovsk Committees as it does not align with the time period. It is required for the New World Order Committee.
  • This portion of the position paper should be approximately a third of a page. It should include the following:
  • What the United Nations has done in regard to the topic
  • Discuss any organizations and resolutions that pertain to the topic
  • Explain any organizations and/or non-profit organizations involved, their functions, missions, and future plans, but avoid just listing organizations.

Country Policy:
  • Explain the country's position and involvement in the topic
  • Discuss any resolutions the country supports and any solutions the country has proposed
  • Summarize how the country has dealt with the problem internally and/or internationally
  • Elaborate on the country's political and social views, the country's allies and their policies, and what the country would most likely do

Possible Solutions:
Solutions must be unique and completely your OWN. Plagiarism is strictly not allowed. Your solutions should be creative and plausible and should align with your country's policy, however, you should not copy the solutions you find in your research that have already been implemented. Education and Social Awareness are good solutions but should never stand alone. We encourage you to present your solutions in steps and/or create an acronym for your solutions.

Works Cited:
  • All position papers require a works cited page
  • Include all the resources you used
  • Avoid using Wikipedia and other sources that are unreliable
  • it is recommended that your Works Cited page is in MLA format. Use the link below to help format citations:
